Bubble Bites Series - Episode 5

Online

21st May 2020, 5:30pm

Thanks to the Creative New Zealand Arts Continuity Grant, Creative Mercury Bay is now able to continue producing the pilot series of Bubble Bites. This means we’ll be creating six more episodes featuring local performance artists, one released every Thursday at 5:30pm for the next six weeks.

Creative Mercury Bay presents our fifth episode of:

"BUBBLE BITES" - A SERIES OF SHORT PERFORMANCE BY ARTISTS FROM THE COROMANDEL

In this weeks episode we feature the below artists:

Retrowhiti - Pop/Rock/Folk/Reggae Duo

Retrowhiti comprises Whitianga-based husband and wife duo Graeme & Svenja Thornber. Graeme is known in the community as a Web Developer and for his involvement with Offbeat Theatre, and Svenja for lending her voice to the Mercury Bay Community Choir and for her various roles at the Whitianga Playcentre.

They will be performing original songs What You Want, Not Too Far and Coro Time.

Follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

RELAPSE Band - Musical Theatre/Originals/Dance Group

RELAPSE band plays a wide range of popular music and original songs that people can dance to, as well as skits, musical theatre and have recently added Poetry to the mix.

They perform at the Whitianga Music Club, birthday celebrations and community events

RELAPSE band consists of four members:

Colin Reid who plays keyboard and rhythm guitar, and sings. He previously played in Incognito with the Rhodes family for 15 years.

Lynda Reid sings, acts and reads poems. She is previously a member of the Mercury Bay Community Choir.

Andy Santos was originally a drummer but was drawn to guitar, and has worked for many years to learn lead guitar. He lends his skills in audio/radio/TV work to the band.

Susan Reid joined us as a harmony singer. She is currently a member of the Mercury Bay Community Choir.

They will be performing original songs The Bush Song, Time and Embryo Poem

Katarina Lee - Author

Katarina Lee is a primary school teacher now semi-retired, who also writes children's books and teen novels.

In this episode of Bubble Bites, Katarina will be reading her children's book, ‘Omri’, an environmental-themed book about an octopus enduring intrusion into his realm at Tiritiri Matangi Island Reserve, after two fishing buddies unwittingly destroy Omri’s castle of shells.

The book has taken on a life of its own, with a life-size Omri accompanying Katarina on a book tour, visiting schools in Auckland and Northland.  School visits were interspersed with beach and roadside rubbish clean-ups, and shared ways kids could care for the environment. Omri’s songs with messages of hope have also been popular, as have Katarina’s free mini writing workshops. You can find a copy of Omri in most school and regional libraries.

Katarina has also published a teen novel ‘Rise of the Boy King’, a story of two twelve-year-old boys who disappear from a maize field near their homes in the native bush of coastal Coromandel. The second book in the ‘Lost in Time’ series; ‘War of the Gods’, has been edited and will be published soon.

Bubble Bites is by locals, for locals, offering ‘bites’ of local talent free to you in your bubble.

Every week at 5:30pm, we’ll release a new episode on our YouTube Channel, a 30min show featuring performances by 3 local artists.
