We are delighted to welcome highly respected second-generation potter and teacher Amanda Ewing as the tutor for our After School Pottery programme at United Makers.

With 15 years experience teaching professionally, Amanda’s practice combines exceptional technical skill with a deep appreciation for the natural world, and she is passionate about sharing the joy of working with clay. Her warm, encouraging teaching style creates a supportive environment where young makers can experiment, build confidence, and develop their own creative voice.

Designed for children aged 7 and over, these weekly classes introduce the foundations of hand-building through fun, hands-on projects. Alongside learning pottery techniques, children will discover the value of patience, perseverance, creative problem-solving, and self-expression as they create a range of functional and decorative pieces to take home.

Beyond her ceramics practice, Amanda has played a key role in the local creative economy. She co-established two successful Thames businesses: Sola Café and Huia design store, and brings valuable practical business knowledge, retail experience, and teaching skills to United Makers. Her involvement strengthens the project’s capacity to support sustainable creative livelihoods as well as artistic development.

No previous experience is needed! Everything is provided, including clay, aprons, glazes, kiln firings, and a light snack. All that’s required is curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to get a little messy!

After School Pottery with Amanda Ewing begins 3 August, running 6 weeks on Mondays from 3:30–5:00pm

Class sizes are limited to just 10 participants, making this a rare opportunity for young artists to learn from one of New Zealand’s most experienced and celebrated ceramic practitioners.
