ARTwaikino is an exhibition in its 23rd year, started by the community in 2000. It’s a huge annual attraction.
As a gauge of art activity in the Coromandel / Hauraki districts and further afield, the level of entrants suggests that creativity is alive and well. Many artists presenting multiple works.
Every year art lovers stop by to enjoy the display and to obtain original affordable art.
Waikino and its environs have a strong representation of creative folks. This is reflected in further activities this Labour Weekend. Waikino School will be hosting art by the village’s younger generations, a network of artists and craftspeople in Waikino and Waihi will have open workshops. There’s the opportunity to visit the gallery at the Waihi museum and several active potters. This is all part of the Waihi Art Trail. ARTWaikino is also joining up with the Coromandel Arts Tour which takes place in October.
Organisers of ARTwaikino have observed that certain genres have, by chance, taken turns to be represented in previous years. They include mosaic, digital photography and felting. It will be interesting to see if there is an ‘art de jour’ this year.
ARTwaikino is an important profile-raising event for the community building in which it takes place. The Hall offers a great meeting place for Waikino residents, who form a strong community, informed by the Waikino Whisper and the social media moniker Hidden in the Hills.
The judges for 2023 are John Mulvay, of Art School Waihi and Elette Wheeler, ex-Auckland School of Design, Massey University
Prizes will be awarded for four categories: painting, photography, sculpture and craft
