The Arts Foundation’s Springboard nominations are open until December 20th 2019.
Springboard aims to kickstart arts careers for emerging artists in Aotearoa, thanks to funding from our community and support from our business club and alumni of Laureates.
A new programme for the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi, Springboard aims to kickstart arts careers for up to ten artists in Aotearoa every year. Recipients are gifted $15,000, alongside a partnership with a senior artist mentor from our alumni of Arts Foundation Laureates, Icons, New Generation, residency or Fellowship recipients (we get by with a little help from our friends). 2020 marks our inaugural year, with six Springboard packages on offer.
Mentors are remunerated with $5,000, and an additional $5,000 is dedicated toward running the selection process, travel expenses for mentor partnerships, and promotion/documentation of the partnership to show impact – bringing the total award value to $25,000.
The selection process focuses on awarding creatives with outstanding potential who want to start careers in a variety of arts disciplines. The financial, mentoring and resource support system will be designed to have a significant impact on their growth and development as artists – giving them a lift of confidence to start a career.
Thanks to funding from our Arts Foundation community, nominations are now open for the six mentor packages kickstarting sustainable arts careers in 2020.
The inaugural Springboard packages have been funded by the Edgar Family, the Todd Trust and some generous givers who attended the 2020 New Zealand Arts Ball.
FAQ
What is the process?
To apply for a Springboard package, you’ll need to nominate yourself (or be nominated by someone else) by 11:59pm Friday the 20th of December 2019. All applications will then be reviewed by a selection panel who will make six selections in early February 2020. All successful applicants will be notified by mid-February 2020.
Our Springboard team and panel will then work to confirm mentor matches over February. We aim to complete our mentor matching by early March 2020 with the ’official’ programme starting Monday the 9th of March 2020.
How much work is required to be submitted?
Not much – we’re not trying to make this hard.
How much money does the recipient receive?
Recipients will receive $15,000 toward sustaining their practise for a year.
When will the recipient be paid?
Through four instalments throughout the year (this can be discussed further with the Arts Foundation’s Artist Liaisons).
Do I get to pick my mentor?
When you nominate yourself, you will be asked to suggest which Mentors out of the Arts Foundation alumni you would like to work with. We’ll work with you to get the best match, and if there isn’t a suitable mentor within the alumnae, we’ll look further afield.
How much time is expected of the Mentors?
We’ll work on solidifying this, but a minimum of four meetups a year.

How many Springboard packages are there?
Six in 2020. We look to offering eight in 2021, and ten in 2022.

How do you define “artist”?
If you have a non-administrative involvement in an art form practice, you’re in with a shot.
