Have a creative practice but haven’t been able to make it work as a career for some reason? Get to the next level, remove the blocks and finally earn a living doing what you do well.
We’re done with exposure. It’s time to raise your practice off the ground and get the superpowers you need to line up a solid career in the arts.
What is ELEVATE?
Supported by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), ELEVATE is a 9-month programme delivered by Creative Waikato, that helps and supports Waikato creative practitioners into achievable, financially viable, and sustainable creative careers.
Through weekly workshops, personal development plans, and expert support from the people who get it, ELEVATE develops business skills, knowledge and resources to help you carve a realistic pathway toward your creative career goals. You’ll join a group of awesome and like minded people, who share your experiences and help you make those exciting next steps.

Is ELEVATE for me?
Freshly graduated or at it for years, there’s no discrimination here. Whatever background, ELEVATE warmly welcomes anyone open and willing to put in the mahi to go after their freelance, part/full time, or self-employment goals.
Available to: Visual performing arts, craft & object, literatire & writing, theatre, fringe, dance, film, television, media, music and production, Nga toi Maori, Pasifika, community and cultural arts, as well as education, commercial arts, tattooing, illustration, architecture, design, production, editing, direction and management etc….if what you do is something you could do in the creative industry – it’s eligible for ELEVATE.
If you:
- Are a creatively driven human being who’s committed to working hard.
- Have a demonstrated commitment to your artform and have been actively creating/sharing work.
- Have industry experience, or a tertiary qualification.
- Are aged between 18-64 yrs
- Live in Waikato
And you:
- Are excited at the thought of a creative career
- May have lost work due to Covid-19
- Are looking to develop powerful skills for your future
Then:
Strap in for some hard mahi, ELEVATE is for you!Once you’ve applied, our Creative Development team will be in touch to run you through a suitability interview, and if you fit the bill you’ll be all set for the next bit if you’re still not sure whether you fit under ‘creative’, apply anyway and we’ll let you know
What’s expected during ELEVATE:
Time, effort and self-motivation as you actively work toward achieving your goals with individually focused guidance from Creative Development mentors. It’s fully funded and there are zero fees, so you’ve got nothing to lose.
You’ll:
- Attend a workshop a week for up to 16 weeks
- Meet regularly with Creative Waikato staff to develop and measure your Personal Development Plan (PDP)
- Show up, believe in yourself and put in some hard mahi that’ll set you up for the rest of your life.

In-takes for ELEVATE are open and will stay open through 2023, so you can jump in and apply at any time.
Applications are now open for ELEVATE DIGITAL – an entirely online version of the programme designed for Waikato based participants living outside Kirikiriroa.
The first group starts 3rd November 2021, with live stream workshops every Wednesday 9am-4pm.
