Rachel Olsen
Rachel paints vibrant and compelling works in her own rich and distinctive style.
Her work is uplifting and often depicts New Zealand summers and the beautiful coastline. She finds inspiration all around her in the natural environment of the Coromandel and wider New Zealand landscape. The ever-changing sea and sky, bush clad hills, character seaside baches and caravans, birds and pohutukawa are among some of her favourite subjects. A good understanding of light, colour and line, combined with a natural ability to draw and compose has given her paintings wide appeal.
Rachel's best known works have a unique 'Kiwi' flavour, and evoke a warm sense of nostalgia and playful wonder, often reminding us of times and places close to our hearts. They feature in particular the east coast of the Coromandel which has been her home since 1989.
Having worked with glass earlier in her career, Rachel made the change to painting in 1997. Since her first solo exhibition in 1999 Rachel has exhibited widely and completed many commission works. Her paintings are held in private collections throughout NZ and overseas, and her work has appeared in several NZ art publications and numerous calendars since 2000.
A founding member of the Mercury Bay Art Escape, Rachel exhibits from her home studio and welcomes visitors by appointment.
