Paul Schrader

Paul Schrader is a photographer living in Pauanui who specialises in landscape, long exposure, and astro photography.

"I can remember as a kid playing around with my grandparent’s old box camera and wondering what all the rotating and sliding switches would do. It was not until I started using our DSLR camera in manual that I realised that the new cameras these days are using basically the same functions and vocabulary as the older original cameras.

Words like (exposure) (f-stop) and (ISO) is all about controlling light into the camera and creating what we call an image, photo or pic.

Using the camera in manual can change dramatically how we see the world, most of us are (point and shoot), letting the camera automatically set the settings and most don’t think about composition.

I guess having studied art in high school and having a creative mind has helped me to compose my shots. Understanding and knowing how to use the camera's manual functions helps to enhance the capture to tell the story, is it windy? are you moving? is something else moving?

How to make the subject stand out, it’s in the dark of night but it looks like daylight. The camera can see things that us humans can’t and how to portray to us humans because we don’t know that it exists.
