Whangamatā Community Matariki Celebrations: June 20–22 2025

The Whangamatā community is once again coming together to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, with a vibrant series of events from June 20 to 22. Building on the strong relationship between the Whangamatā Art Collective, local iwi, and the Marae committee, this year's celebrations promise to be both fun and deeply meaningful. Throughout the three days, the public will be treated to a range of activities designed to honour the spirit of Matariki. Highlights include a traditional hāngī, live entertainment, and a variety of creative and informative workshops led by local artists and iwi representatives. These events aim to share the significance of Matariki, weaving together storytelling, art, and cultural connection. The Whangamatā Art Collective is proud to work closely with the Marae and iwi once more, reflecting a strong and respectful partnership that enriches the celebrations each year. Everyone is welcome to come along, learn, and enjoy the warmth of the community as Whangamatā looks to the stars and welcomes the new year.
