Sunday Concert Features Olga Shanina and Rosemary Barnes
Thames Music Group’s Sunday 14 June concert presents soprano Olga Shanina, accompanied by pianist Rosemary Barnes. Their program will feature arias by Italian, German, French, and Russian composers. All arias and romances will be performed in their original languages.
Olga is a graduate of the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory and built her career as a leading soloist of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. She has toured in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Japan, and China. Her repertoire includes the roles of: Violetta in La Traviata (more than 100 performances in various productions); Gilda in Rigoletto; Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro; to name just a few. She has served as a jury member of international vocal competitions in Saint Petersburg (Russia), Yancheng, and Haikou (Hainan, China). Olga now lives in New Zealand, where she participates in festivals, concerts, and solo programs. Olga works with distinguished accompanist pianist Rosemary Barnes.
Rosemary Barnes was awarded a New Zealand Arts Council bursary and studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music with Franz Reizenstein. She worked in London, England, for 28 years as an accompanist and vocal coach, notably working as a music staff member at the English National Opera 1980-1988, and teaching at the Royal College of Music. On her return to New Zealand, she performed at NZ International Festival of the Arts, 1990; and was Director of the Dip Perf Arts (Opera) at the University of Auckland 1993-1999. Awarded an MNZM – Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit – for her services to music in 2000.
