This workshop offers an unparalleled opportunity to learn traditional and innovative techniques, gain insights into the philosophies of these accomplished artists, and experience an experimental firing in the Driving Creek Phoenix wood fired kiln.   Participants need to bring their own piece(s) for the firing that fit into a shoebox. Pieces need to be stoneware clay, bisque for the purposes of travel otherwise greenware is fine. Bring their notebooks and PPE for firing; gloves, eye shades, hats, warm gear for the night session, full enclosed boots and shoes. Driving Creek will have some PPE available. All tools and materials will be provided. Participants should bring their own lunch, tea and coffee will be provided. What You’ll Learn:
  • Slide Show Presentation in evening: Slideshows of Aaron and and Sergei's works and stories
  • Clay preparation: preparing clay and manipulating the clay chemistry for slips and wood firing.
  • Wheel Throwing techniques: throwing off the hump, throwing in sections, coiling techniques, altering form, stretching, impressions on surface
  • Post-Wheel techniques: trimming, carving, manipulation of form, using slip
  • Packing the kiln with greenware: the do's and don'ts of packing pots green for a wood firing. A look at the kiln space and discussing how flame and fire is expected to manipulate the surface of the piece.
  • Firing the kiln: patient pre-heating of the kiln. Learning how to switch off from the world and quietly focus on the flame.
  • Unpacking the kiln: unpack pieces, celebrate results, learning to accepting the beautiful along with the disappointments
This workshop is ideal for potters with intermediate to advanced skills who are eager to deepen their understanding of wood-firing techniques and create pieces uniquely suited to this process.
