The Connect Four exhibition with Maori toi features work by famous carver Dr Pakaariki “Paki” Harrison QSO, work by his whanau, paintings by local artists Julie Dann and Elisabeth Carter, and pottery by Murray Rainey. This event provides a rare opportunity to experience the work of Paki, who was named a living icon by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand in 2005 before his passing in 2008.   Paki oversaw the building of 10 carved wharenui including those at the University of Auckland, Manukau Institute of Technology and Kennedy Bay Coromandel. His carvings, a korowai (ceremonial cloak) by his wife Hinemoa, and stunning toi (art) by their children Kelly and Fred Harrison will be on show. In addition, potter Murray Rainey's work includes everything from mugs to Greek-inspired vases and jugs. Painter Julie Dann loves having the freedom to capture the our skies, sea and land, mainly in acrylics, on canvas. Elisabeth Carter's source of inspiration is her floristry business, which she conveys on canvas to create an emotive marvel of floral artwork. As for the Harrison family, their exhibition space will feature pou whakairo, which are ancestors’ full-size traditional house-style carvings,  waka huia (treasure box), tukutuku (ornamental wall panels), paddles (hoe) and raranga (weaving). Contemporary works will include a carved surfboard. This really is an event not to be missed. Last year's Connect Four exhibition was one of the most popular in Coromandel. Nau mai haere mai. A warm welcome awaits. Entry is free. Hauraki House Gallery, Kapanga | Coromandel Town.
