Daniel Kirsch draws his inspiration from the land around him, by keeping a keen eye on the cultural environment and the element of impermanence. Spending a good amount of time in the outdoors, he fostered a close relationship with the natural world around him.
Currently residing in the Coromandel, Daniel grew up and began his career in Berlin. He enjoys the two main cultural traditions in New Zealand which are both very present in Coromandel. As an ‘outsider’ Daniel has immensely valued the opportunity to study Te Reo and begin to explore some of the richness of Maori language and culture.
Daniel’s work encompasses a variety of media including; ink drawings, print, as well as incorporating photographic images and typography screen print on paper, fabric and found materials such as old boards and panels.
Daniel’s urban German heritage and rural New Zealand knowledge informs a lot of Daniel’s work, providing a unique slant to his work.
“Iconic work. Something especially New Zealand.” (TJ McNamara, NZ Herald 2010)
