Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition

The Lion Foundation National Secondary School Songwriting Competition is the flagship programme of the Play It Strange Trust.

The competition is open to every NZ secondary school student (including home-schooled), Years 9 to 13.

This competition celebrates and embraces the voice of our youth through song.

The original song entries are judged 50% on the lyrics and 50% on the music.

We require a recording of your song and a lyric sheet. The quality of the recording and the performance is not taken into consideration in the judging process.

Terms & Conditions



The finalists have their songs recorded at a professional recording studio.Each recorded song is mastered and included on the annual Play It Strange album.



The song writer/s will receive the Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition 1st Place Trophy, a $1,000 NZ Rockshop voucher and a NZ On Air “Special Tracks” grant of up to $8,000 for recording the track professionally and to make a music video.

Junior Maioha Award - Best song in Te Reo Maori

David Richwhite Lyric Award - Best lyrics

Play It Strange PWC School Of The Year - To the school with the most songs in the finalists



Entry is online and your song must be authorised by your school’s principal or other teacher (see entry form). Our judging panel does not take the entry’s recording or performance quality into account.

Each song is judged equally - The original song entries are judged 50% on the lyrics and 50% on the music.

The song can be recorded by a group or by an individual (see the conditions of entry for more information).
